‘Ashadhi Ekadashi’ is one of the most important of Hindu festivals celebrated on a large scale in both North and South India in the Hindu month of Ashadh Shukla Paksha. The eleventh day (bright moon) of the Hindu month of Ashadh is known as Maha Ekadashi or ‘Shayani Ekadashi’ because on this day Lord Vishnu, it is believed, will go to sleep and will only awaken from deep slumber four months later on Prabodhini Ekadashi in the Hindu month of Kartik. This period in the Hindu calendar is known as ‘Chaturmasa’.
