On September 17, 1944, a gamble by British Field Marshal Montgomery to hasten the end of World War II ended in a calamity at the Dutch town of Arnhem. The daring plan, named Operation ‘Market Garden’, did not succeed. The bridge at Arnhem proved to be ‘a bridge too far'.
