Carlos seeks corporate support in making Vasco garbage-free 

 

VASCO: Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida has appealed to the corporates to lend support to cleanliness efforts in Vasco by sponsoring compactors and sweeping machines in order to make the town garbage-free by October 2.

In this regard, the deputy collector and sub-divisional magistrate, Mormugao, Gauresh Shankhwalkar convened a special meeting of various government departments and corporate houses located in and around the port town on Thursday following a request from the MLA.

The meeting was also attended by Mormugao Municipal Council chairperson Deepak Naik, chief officer Deepali Naik, Mormugao mamlatdar Laxmikant Dessai, Vasco PI Sagar Ekoskar, traffic cell PI Sudesh Narvekar, officials of PWD, health, water resources department, councillors besides the representatives of Airport Authority of India (AAI), Mormugao Port Trust (MPT), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) and other corporate houses.

Almeida disclosed that efforts are on to make Vasco garbage-free by October 2. He said there are several problems faced by the municipality in carrying out garbage collection due to lack of facilities. He said he had proposed to the MPT to provide sweeping machine while AAI, IOCL and HPCL compactors for daily collection of garbage.

“The government agencies and Mormugao municipal authorities will be fully involved to make Vasco free of garbage,” he said.

MMC chairperson Deepak informed that they will be receiving seven Tata mini hopper trucks from director of municipal administration to lift garbage from various parts of the municipal area. “The mini hopper trucks will ease garbage collection task,” he said.

Deputy collector and sub-divisional magistrate Shankhwalkar said the meeting was convened as part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan programme wherein various agencies besides the corporate houses were invited to get them involved in the mission under their corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities.

“We have collected inputs from various agencies and corporate houses as how they could help under their CSR programme in making Vasco garbage-free in view of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan,” said Shankhwalkar.

“The meeting also reviewed the status of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in Vasco,” he said.
