Vasco: The repair work of the foot overbridge in Vasco, which was in a precarious condition, has been taken up by the South Western Railway (SWR). The foot overbridge provides connectivity to the heart of Vasco from Driver Hill.
The inspection of the repair work of the overbridge was conducted by Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida on Saturday in the presence of station manager (Vasco railway station) P C Chacko, Vasco BJP president Rajan Dicholkar, councillors of Mormugao Municipal Council Fredrick Henriques, Reema Sonurlekar, Yatin Kamurlekar, former MMC chairpersons Manesh Arolkar and Devika Arolkar, besides Umesh Salgaonkar, Vinayak Ghonge and others.
“The repair cum maintenance work of the railway foot overbridge as well as the construction work of a road at Driver Hill in SWR property were held up due to the model code of conduct,” said Almeida and expressed gratitude to the SWR authorities for giving priorities to the people-oriented projects.
“The Goa government has no role to play in the construction of road and also repair cum maintenance work of the railway foot overbridge. It has been taken up by SWR with their own funds,” he said and appealed to the people to cooperate with the SWR.
Speaking about pre-monsoon work, Almeida said that he would take up the issue before the director of municipal administration.
“The pre-monsoon work needs to be taken up on priority by the municipal authorities as monsoon is just days away. As a legislator of Vasco constituency, I take initiatives every year to ensure there is no flooding in Vasco town and I am thankful to the administration for its support,” he said.
On the proposed hot-mix carpeting work of the F L Gomes, which is estimated to cost around Rs 2.5 crore and which was to start in April, Almeida said that “the work order was issued, but as the asphalt was not available, the work got delayed. However, the work is likely to be taken up.”
Meanwhile, station manager of Vasco railway station Chacko informed that the total cost of repair cum maintenance work of railway foot overbridge is around Rs 10 lakh, while the construction of road at Driver Hill is estimated to cost Rs 5 lakh.
“The SWR has taken up the repair cum maintenance work of 57-metre railway foot overbridge, starting from the hillock side of Driver Hill and the same will be completed by June 15. The work includes placement of 4 mm steel thick plates and concreting, besides installing angles and C-channels,” informed Chacko.
