CANACONA: Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) on Thursday, at a special meeting convened to discuss the garbage issue and pre-monsoon work, resolved to consult a contractor and hire labour for door-to-door collection of garbage from 10 wards of the municipal area.
As per CMC chairperson Prathana Naik Gaonkar, the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) has approved 30 labour who are entitled to wages of Rs 325 per day.
However, the councillors have decided to consult a contractor and hire labour so that pre-monsoon works in different wards are carried out neatly.
The councillors present for the meeting pointed that the desilting work in their respective ward needs to be taken up before the monsoon and wards that are prone to flooding like Char rasta, Chauri and Palolem need more attention.
Mastimol ward councillor brought to the notice of the chairperson that the garbage bins placed at different spots should have a fence or metal enclosure as stray cattle rummage through the waste and scatters it all around.
He also urged the chairperson to keep these bins till the door-to-door garbage collection becomes regular and systematic.
It was pointed that the tricycle riders face problems, especially in ward like Mastimol when they go for door-to-door garbage collection, due to steep roads.
Some councillors felt that the interior roads should be cleared of roadside dumped material and such dumping should be prevented in future.
The chairperson sought a report on a daily basis from the municipal surveyor and inspector about irregularities within the municipal limits.
