Calangute locals seek special gram sabha over ‘structures’ in CRZ

The villagers of Calangute want the panchayat to hold a special gram sabha to discuss the draft CZMP for the village and also want their illegal houses and other structures located in the CRZ to be shown in the plan.

The environment department had sent an official from the land survey department to explain about the map, which has been drawn for the village of Calangute, and to know if the locals had any suggestions and objections to be raised.

The official explained to the people what has been marked on the map like the high-tide line, the low-tide line, the eco-sensitive area and asked them to send their suggestions and objections within 15 days to the CRZ office.

However, the villagers raised the issue of their structures which are not shown on the plan.

They asked the panchayat to hold a special gram sabha so that people can raise suggestions and objections. The panchayat members, who were present at the meeting, told the villagers that the panchayat will discuss if it is necessary to hold a special gram sabha on the issue.

Sarpanch of Calangute Francisco Rodrigues, when asked if the panchayat will hold a special gram sabha on the issue, he told this daily that he will be discussing the issue with other members and accordingly take a call.

Some villagers also highlighted that the whole beach stretch is being marked in blue line and it needs to be rectified if not there will be a major problem in holding commercial activities.

They said that if the plan was cleared without any rectification, in future, the shacks which are being erected on the tourism property would not be allowed.

Meanwhile, the Candolim villagers raised the issue of mangroves, that have been formed due to saline water entering fields, at the meeting held to explain about the draft CZMP.

The villagers questioned the land survey official, who was sent by the concerned department to explain the villagers about the CRZ notification and the draft CZMP.

It was stated that the fisheries department has already carried out necessary zoning for the fishermen which has been incorporated.

The villagers questioned if their fields would be shown on the map where at present mangroves have come up due to saline water entering fields. They also raised queries over sluice gates
and bunds.

Candolim sarpanch Blaize Fernandes told the villagers that the panchayat has already prepared the village map with the support of the residents and taken into consideration all the aspects.
