Calangute halt Velsao’s winning run

Navelim: Calangute Association ended Velsao Sports and Cultural Club’s four-match unbeaten run following their solitary goal win at Rosary ground, Navelim in the Goa Football Association Goa Professional League on Friday.

First half substitute Alesh Sawant scored the only goal of the game in the 44th minute.

The teams started in earnest manner with a midfield battle but Calangute soon took control of the game. Velsao weren’t at their regular best which saw them defending poorly and giving away the ball too often. They conceded couple of free kicks outside the box and Alesh Sawant punished them in the 44th minute after coming in as a substitute for U-20 Malik Mulla when he scored from a direct freekick. The winners led 1-0 at the break.

In the second half there were chances created but neither side were able to get the ball into the net. Velsao SCC were awarded a penalty in the second half but Velsao’s Rohan Kamble shot it wide. The final score remained 1-0.

Calangute now move to 19 points from 16 games while Velsao remain on 15 points from 18 matches.

At Duler stadium: FC Goa were beaten by a determined Guardian Angel SC 2-1.

Guardian Angel SC attacked from the word go and took the lead in the 11th minute through Bamba Musah. Despite having their best players — Princeton Rebello and Kingslee Fernandes, Gaurs struggled to find the net.

At the other end, Guardian Angel doubled the

lead through Beneston Barreto.

In the second half FC Goa managed to reduce the deficit from a free kick through Lalwmpuia.

Guardian Angel now move on to 23 points from 19 matches while FC Goa remain on 27 points from 16 games.
