Duler: Calangute Association continued where Velsao SCC left by shocking Salgaocar FC 2-1 in the Goa Football Association (GFA) Professional league at Duler stadium on Monday.
On Monday, football was played in patches of missed chances and opportunities capitalized and in the end Calangute Association thoroughly deserved the three points.
Calangute Association showed the first ripple of their winning intent when in the second minute Valerio rodrigues sent in a shot from the top of the box that rattled the Salgaocar horizontal. The message then was – don’t take us lightly and it played on till the final whistle.
It took the Salgaocar lads time to break through the Calangute defense and when they did, for the first time, in the 13th minute Steflon D’costa only needed to put the ball past Calangute keeper Sanij Bugde but the latter proved better.
Salgaocar coach Levino Pereira did not start with Chaitan Komarpant and the team for a major part of the first half tended to try and break the Calangute defense with through passes. Ribhav , in particular tried to find the gaps for his colleagues and when he did , they failed to shoot at target with Andrus John being the main culprit.
With Salgaocar enjoying ascendancy , the Calangute lads resorted to counter attacks and it was during one such attack , in the 42ned minute that Akush Kudnekar who had moved forward was tripped inside the box and referee Deepraj rightly pointed to the dreaded spot. Valerio , who had hit the post before, found the nets with the penalty. The winners trooped of for the break, leading by a goal. Calangute began the second half with more intensity then their rivals and it paid off five minutes into the second session when Valerio found jobber Cardozo with a nice cross for the latter to score past a helpless Salgaocar Jason D’mello.
Down by two goals , Salgaocar tried to bring flair their game but it was not enough because they needed to score goals and they got few chances.
Captain Devendra Dhaku Murgaonkar , who normally carried the onus of scoring, appeared to have left his habit behind . There were times when he could have scored and did not and there were times when he could have created better assists and did not. In the end, it was left to substitute Stephen Satarkar to try and unbalance the Calangute defense that stood their ground. Captain Moises D’sa of Calangute Association was the star of the evening. He fell back to help the defense; controlled the game in the midfield; and helped his colleagues make inroads into the Salgaocar territory. In short, he did not allow Salgaocar FC enjoy midfield superiority.
As time ticked by, Devendra had a crack at the opponent’s goal but he could not beat goalkeeper Sanij Bugde who did not have a busy day as Calangute stoppers Krishnanath Shirodkar and Chandan Govenkar kept the Salgaocar lads at bay.
Salgaocar , however, managed to pull a goal back when in the 67th minute Selwyn Miranda of salgaocar was brought down by Minesh Kunkolkar . saeesh Halarnkar who stepped up to take the opportunity completely with ease by side stepping Calangute keeper Sanij.
Towards the end, Ribhav Sardesai who thrilled with his individual brilliance showed signs of fatigue and Chaitan tried to lift the tempo from the right. However, the Calangute boys left the boys from Vasco rue the chances they could have created or missed.
