Calangute Association snatch win from resilient Army men

Duler: Calangute Association secured a hard-fought solitary goal win over Corps of Signals in the Goa Football Association (GFA) Professional League match, played at Duler Stadium, here on Monday. Daryl Costa scored the all-important goal for the winners.

Signals coach Eban Mesquita made a few changes after his team’s 0-3 defeat at the hands of FC Goa with keeper Binu Purushothaman, Pawan Thakur, Aditya D’Crus and Melroy Moura being given a nod in.

Calangute, on the other hand, had Chandan Govenkar replacing  injured Moises D’Sa.

The Army men started the match on an attacking note but it was Calangute who first came close to scoring when Signals defender Amit Tariyal made a back pass to his keeper Binu which was intercepted by Calangute forward Chandan but his tap was brilliantly blocked by the Signals’ custodian.

A few minutes later, Calangute made a swift attack through defender Minesh Kunkolkar who made a fine through pass to Chandan in the box but the forward failed to reach as the ball  and it went out for a goal kick.

Signals had their first look at the goal in the 42nd minute when their U-20 winger Aditya made a perfect cross to Nim Bhutia in the box but the midfielder’s goal bound header was collected by diving Calangute keeper Sanij Bugde.

After probing attacks, Calangute finally took the lead in the 45th minute when Malik Mulla tried to find his teammate Daryl Costa with a curler but the forward failed to connect from close. However, the ball hit Signal defender Amit and rolled to the forward who placed the ball at the far post to give his side the lead.

Calangute almost doubled their lead during the added time of the first half when Malik sent a perfect corner to Gourav Kankonkar in the box who headed in but Signals keeper Binu stretched to his limit to deny the midfielder.

Down by a goal, Signals made double substitution at the half time withboth the U-20 Aditya and Melroy making way for Shuklab Bordoloi and L. Nokul Singh and the midfielders strengthened their attack  as Signals made back to back raids on the rivals in the first few minutes but could not manage to break Calangute’s strong defense.

Calangute once again came close to double their tally as Chandan brilliantly dribbled past a defender to enter the box and sent a low cross to his teammate Malik but keeper Binu made a diving effort to clear the danger on time.

At the other end, Signals made quick attacks but first Nokul shot over the crossbar from inside the box. Three minutes later, Nokul made a darting run on the wing and found Pawan Thakur in the commanding position with a smart cut-back but, the lad failed to keep his shot on target.

In the dying minutes of the match, the Army men tried hard to come back in the match with continues attacks but Calangute defenders Krishnanath Shirodkar and Gourav Vaigankar along with Minesh Kunkolkar and Joaquim Carvalho kept every danger at the bay to book all three points from a difficult match.
