The most awaited festival of the monsoons, Sao Joao was celebrated throughout the state on June 24 with fun, great pomp and gaiety. The day long celebration commenced with making of the traditional ‘kopel’. At various places across the state, men and boys jumped in the wells wearing their kopels. Several Goan delicacies such as patolios and sweets made of rice, coconut jaggery add to the true essence of the celebration. The festival also saw a number of rain dances as a part of the revelry. Sao Joao celebrations at Siolim, like every year, hosted the annual boat competition. While in the villages of Baga, Navelim, Benaulim, the celebrations included singing traditional songs and other fun activities.
