Manika Batra recommended for Khel Ratna
KOLKATA: The Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) on Tuesday recommended star paddler Manika Batra’s name for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award. This is the second time Manika, the first woman table tennis player from India to win a singles gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, has been recommended for the highest sporting honour after she missed out the last time.
Pratik Chaudhari leaves Mumbai City FC
MUMBAI: Defender Pratik Chaudhari has left Mumbai City FC, the Indian Super League (ISL) franchise announced on Tuesday. Chaudhari played for one season in Mumbai, scoring one goal as the team finished fifth and missed out on a playoff spot. He made 17 appearances for the team over the course of the season after joining the team from Jamshedpur FC.

MADRID: Catalan radio station RAC1 reported on Tuesday that five players from FC Barcelona and two members of the coaching staff tested positive for the COVID-19 in tests carried out by the Spanish football league (LaLiga) at the start of May.

MADRID: Brazil great Ronaldo has rated Lionel Messi as the best player in the world at the moment. When asked to name his top five current football players, Ronaldo named Liverpool star Mohammed Salah, Real Madrid’s Eden Hazard and Paris St Germain duo Neymar and Kylian Mbappe apart from Messi. However, Juventus superstar and Messi’s arch rival Cristiano Ronaldo was a notable omission from his list.
Coutinho interested in Premier League return
LONDON: Brazilian footballer Philippe Coutinho is interested in making a return to Premier League, according to his agent Kia Joorabchian. According to media reports in England, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal are in the running to sign Coutinho while his former Liverpool manager Brendon Rodgers, currently at helm at Leicester City, seems to be interested as well.
T20 WC will not happen this year: Dean Jones
NEW DELHI: Former Australia batsman Dean Jones is of the opinion that the T20 World Cup slated to be held in his home country is not going to happen this year. “T20 World Cup isn’t going to happen in Australia this year for a lot of reasons,” Jones said on Sportscreen’s YouTube page.
Hasenhuttl extends Southampton stay until 2024
LONDON: Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has signed a new four-year contract with the club which will keep him at St Mary’s until 2024. Alongside Ralph, Richard Kitzbichler has also extended his contract as first team assistant coach, and will continue to work alongside the existing first team staff of Craig Fleming, Dave Watson, Kelvin Davis, Andrew Sparkes and Alek Gross.
County players accept pay cut for June, July
LONDON: The Professional Cricketers’ Association have agreed to extend the reduction in remuneration for county players until the end of July amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This comes after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) last week announced that no domestic cricket activities will take place in the country till August 1.
