Navelim: Velsao Sports and Cultural Club put up a brave fight against Salgaocar Football Club as they held them to a 1-1 draw in the GFA’s Goa Professional League match played at Rosary ground, Navelim, on Sunday.
Velsao’s Remedios Vaz scored an 84th minute equaliser to cancel out Salgaocar FC’s Chaitan Komarpant’s third minute lead.
After playing their 14th match, Velsao SCC are on eight points while the Green Brigade are on 25 points from 16 games.
Velsao SCC, who are currently rooted at the bottom of the table are struggling in the league and the start was hampered early in the game when a defensive lapse allowed Salgaocar FC to penetrate from the left wing and the attack was converted into a goal as Chaitan Komarpant, who was lurking in the box, guided the ball into the net to give his side a 1-0 lead.
Compared to their previous performances, Velsao SCC played a better football as the players confidently held the ball making it difficult for Salgaocar FC.
Though the Green Brigade had their few chances, it failed to threaten the Velsao SCC goalkeeper.
In the second half, Salgaocar FC looked more fearful as they threw more men upfront with first half substitute Stephen Satarkar, who replaced Andrus John, made it difficult with his quick feet for Velsao’s defence.
At the other end, Velsao’s Ronil Azavedo played a composed game in the midfield bringing in stability to Velsao’s game plan.
Salgaocar FC, who were better in the second session had couple of chances to kill the game, but Devendra Murgaonkar and Stephen Satarkar were both denied by some good goalkeeping by Velsao’s custodian Presley Mascarenhas.
Finally Velsao SCC restored parity in the 84th minute when second half substitute Jesloy Moniz did the initial spade work and played a cut back pass to Remedios Vaz and the lad scored with a perfect left foot strike to make it 1-1.
