Music Open Mic, a performance space that gives locals a platform to bring forth their talent might be a common trend in metro cities, but it is fairly new in Goa. Today, with the theme ‘Variety Nights’, a throng of budding musicians, stand-up comics, and poets will come together at Mark 1 Event Hall, above the Panjim Community Centre, Mala, from 7 p.m. onwards.

Producer of Music Mics, Jeruel Paul says: “What we normally host is a bi-weekly open mic, with a line-up of three to four sets of artistes who get 20 minutes each to perform their talent. We call these shows Music Open Mics and the second season is now called Music Open Mic 2.0.”

The artistes who will be performing are Shynel Pinto and Himanshu Bharadwaj (music); Ashis Acharjya and Fardeen Veljee (comedy) and Alisha Pilgaonkar and Stacy Almeida (poetry). The show is being hosted by Shreyas Manohar and Jeruel Paul.

‘Variety Nights’ falls under the category of theme nights that are hosted once in two months. The other theme nights that have been organised are Retro Nights, Christmas Nights, etc. Jeruel who is a student of Goa University, further says that this is the first time they are organising such an event that is not limited to either music or comedy.

Through such sessions their aim has always been to promote live talent. Jeruel says: “We wanted to create a space where professional musicians and aspiring musicians could perform at the same level.”

Jeruel also says that Goa is home to thousands of talented artistes, and considering the fact that a lot of them are first time performers, they are nervous about taking to the stage in front of a huge audience. He adds: “We give artistes a modest, but serious first step into a bigger scene, and what could be better than doing your first musical gig/casual jam in front of your own family and friends who support you?”

(Tickets available for `150.
