Bengaluru FC qualify for final round as Salgaocar hold Dempo

DULER: Bengaluru FC brushed aside the challenge of Sporting Clube de Goa with a comprehensive 4-0 win at Duler stadium on Monday and qualified for the final round of the AIFF U-16 Youth league to be held in Mumbai some time later. This was Bengaluru’s second win in as many matches and their last match against Dempo SC on Wedensday becomes inconsequential as Dempo were held to a 2-2 draw by Salgaocar FC later in the evening at the same ground.

The Dempo SC, Salgaocar FC match witnessed some inspiring football from the colts of both teams. There was some crispy footwork at timers and players of both sides did not appear hazed when they were in possession of the ball.

Salgaocar FC enjoyed domination in the first half and it was during this time that they took the lead when Chaitan Komarpant let go a free kick which entered the Dempo goal after grazing the fingers of Dempo SC goalkeeper Churchill Carvalho. Churchill had a good game for his team in the first match against sporting. However, he seemed to have developed butter fingers against Salgaocar FC in the first session of play. Aaron Bareto , Ashwin fernandes and Ribhav Sardesai controlled the pace of the game for Salgaocar in the first session and it was through the ball control demonstrated by these three that eneabled Salgaocar enjoy the major shares of the first session.

Dempo SC started the second half of a higher pitch and Captain Boris and Aaron Alvares approach enabled the team to level terms. Baggio Fernandes, got the ball in a tussle with two Salgaocar defenders inside the box and with little hesitation slid it past the Salgaocar goalkeeper to draw parity.

Dempo SC must thank defenders Nikil Gurung for holding the Salgaocar strikers at bay. Though the Salgaocar defenders resorted to the offside trap and succeeded many times, Nikil got his colleagues to mark the opponents and thwart their moves with their clean tackles.

Dempo SC took the lead through a free kick converted by Captain Borim De Melo. The free kick was the result of well practiced dead ball situation.

When it appeared that Dempo were heading for a summit clash with bengaluru FC on Wednesday, Salgaocar FC equalised through  another free kick and thus Bengaluru walked into the final round of the AIFF U-16 final round.

Earlier in the morning, Bengaluru FC made light work of Sporting Clube de Goa 4-0. In their first match, they had humbled Salgaocar FC 4-1, taking their tally to six points.

Dempo Sports club had beaten Sporting Clube de Goa by a solitary goal in their first match and had they won against Salgaocar they too would have had six points and their final match against Bengaluru on Wednesday would have been crucial.
