Benaulim youth arrested for murdering 22-yr-old woman

A 24-year-old youth from Benaulim allegedly committed murder of his female friend, aged 22, on Friday late night and surrendered before Colva police.

The deceased woman is a resident of Comba-Margao while the alleged accused is from Benaulim. The murder was committed at an isolated spot at Monte-Benaulim, the police said.

South Goa SP Arvind Gawas on Saturday said that the alleged accused has been arrested under section 302 of IPC for committing murder and lodged in police custody on seven-day remand. He will be interrogated to get more details of the incident, said SP Gawas.  

Police disclosed the name of the alleged accused as Melbourn Fernandes, 24, a resident of Mazilwaddo-Benaulim, while deceased’s name was disclosed as Jennifer Gonsalves, aged 22.

The police said that the alleged accused was employed at a hotel. Police said that the alleged accused strangulated the woman with a cloth that resulted in her death. Police said that the alleged accused doubted the girl of having an affair.

According to Colva police, the alleged accused picked up the girl from her residence and took her around on his scooter and then they went to Monte in Benaulim where the girl was done to death.

Police said that after committing the act, the youth came to the Colva police station and surrendered himself.

Police said that his scooter has been seized while the piece of cloth used by him to allegedly kill the woman was yet to be found.

Police sub inspector Rahul Naik on Saturday evening visited the murder spot. South Goa SP Arvind Gawas also visited the site.

According to Colva police, the alleged accused had seen his 22-year-old girlfriend speaking to another boy and this had left him enraged.

Meanwhile, the police on Saturday informed that the postmortem report has revealed the cause of death as due to strangulation. Police handed over the body to the family after the postmortem examination.
