Bardez agriculture office tops in vegetable supply to horticulture corp

MAPUSA: The Bardez zonal agriculture office in Mapusa has been awarded a trophy for being the highest vegetable supplier in Goa to state horticulture corporation. The trophy was handed over to the zonal agriculture officer D Paranjape by horticulture corporation at a function held recently.
Speaking to this reporter, Paranjape said that the trophy was the result of hectic awareness among farmers in Bardez on vegetable cultivation.
“This trophy proves that farmers in Bardez are far ahead than farmers from other parts of the state in vegetable cultivation and this has been possible only due to efforts of our dedicated staff who gave a push to the farmers and convinced them to take up cultivation of vegetables,” he said. Pointing out that a lot of fallow land in Bardez has been brought under cultivation, Paranjape said that still more land is needed to be covered under vegetable cultivation.
According to Paranjape, Bardez taluka produced 47.186 tonne of 12 different types of local vegetables in 2013-14, which are being bought by horticulture corporation and this was nearly 50 per cent of state’s requirement.
“We have roughly 100 hectare of land covered under vegetable cultivation in Bardez and we are planning to double the same this year,” he informed. He felt that if Bardez zone alone could meet nearly half of Goa’s vegetable requirement then the day would not be far when Goa would be self sufficient in vegetable production provided farmers from all over Goa worked in that direction.
