Assault on seafarer: 5 policemen issued charge memo

The Goa police department has issued charge memorandum to the five suspended police personnel against whom a departmental enquiry has been initiated in connection with the alleged assault on a 32-year-old seafarer Clint Rebello from Betul.

The five police personnel, police sub-inspector Mahesh Velip and four constables – Upendra Upaskar, Sandeep Konkre, Gitesh Gaonkar and driver Chandru Gaonkar were suspended on Wednesday.

The charge memorandum have been issued to them asking for their reply, informed a senior police officer. The 32-year-old youth from Betul had alleged that he was “brutally assaulted by five policemen attached to Cuncolim police station on Sunday night over a verbal spat, following the delay in clearing a traffic blockade near Assolna ferry point.” In connection with the incident the police had also registered an FIR against him on charges of assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty and the case has been transferred from Cuncolim police station to the crime branch police.

Meanwhile in view of the incident, the police department has instructed superintendent of police of North and South Goa to brief police personnel during the sampark sabhas on the code of conduct. “Police is a disciplined force and if any citizen disobeys law then it should be tackled though legal mechanism. Physical action will not be tolerated’, said a senior police officer.
