VASCO: Mormugao Municipal Council chief officer J Bhingui has said that his priority will be to strengthen financial position of the municipality by recovering arrears of Rs 10 crore.
Speaking to the media, Bhingui, who replaced Meghnath Porob as MMC chief officer, on December 8, said that he was surprised to know about the financial condition of the MMC which is a serious concern.
He said that going through the recovery records of the municipality, he found that there are around Rs 10 crore tax arrears.
There is an urgent need to recover arrears from the residents including municipal tenants, he said.
“I have noticed that the house tax and professional trade tax has not been recovered by the authorities, due to which the MMC is facing a major financial crunch,” he said.
He said that although the MMC has constituted a team of municipal engineers for the recovery of the arrears, there is a need to actually encourage the municipal staff to carry out the recovery.
He also said that there is a need to initiate strict action against the handcart owners who are operating illegally near the Vasco railway station during the evening hours.
“I have noticed that handcarts are being operated near Vasco railway station, and the owners are involved in selling omlet pao and other food items prepared in unhygienic condition,” he said
The handcart operators should not play with the health of the people, he said.
“Directions have been given to the municipal engineers and sanitation department to seize the handcarts which are operating illegally at Vasco railway station and various other locations in the town”, he said.
He also raised serious concern over the traffic congestion caused during the evening hours near Vasco railway station due to the encroachment by the handcart operators.
