Arpora: Deepika Redkar was elected unopposed as sarpanch of Arpora-Nagoa village panchayat at the election held at the panchayat office at Arpora on Tuesday.
Ex sarpanch Sakaram Naik had resigned from the post of sarpanch and ever since the post remained vacant.
Krishna Gadekar from the BDO office Mapusa was the presiding officer. Arpora panchayat secretary Rui Cardoso assisted him to conduct the election.
Gadekar told this daily that only one nomination was received for the post of sarpanch with Rajesh Morajkar proposing the name of Deepika Redkar and Sakaram Naik seconding it. All panchayat members were present for the election.
Speaking to media persons, Redkar said that her main priorities will be to construct Panchayat Ghar which is a long-pending issue and a football ground for the youth of Arpora-Nagoa.
Raising the stray cattle issue, panch member Salim Sayeed said that tourists are particularly at the receiving end as stray cattle sit on the road and accidents have taken place with as many as three fatal accidents caused due to the stray cattle.
Ex sarpanch of Arpora-Nagoa Augustinho D’Souza told said that the panchayat has got a proposal on the stray cattle adding, “There is an organisation that will impound cattle but the panchayat is awaiting government sanction. The stray cattle are becoming a nuisance to the village and specially the tourists.”
Speaking further, he said that garbage is another main issue that Arpora sarpanch has to tackle as people are throwing garbage in the nullahs, which are not de-silted and the panchayat will have to write to the WRD to de-silt the nullahs so that there is free flow of rain water, he said.
