Arlem YA edge Maina SC to seal final berth

Arlem Youth Association entered the finals of 7th St Sebastian Union inter-village football tournament defeating Maina SC 3-2 in the closely contested semifinals match played at St John, the Baptist grounds, Benaulim on Saturday.

Lloyd Cardozo (8th minute), Joyston Barbosa (19th minute) and Clins Mendes (55th minute) contributed with a goal to help Arlem YA clinched a thrilling win.

For Maina SC, their speedy striker Milagres Fernandes pulled two goals back, finding the mark in the 16th and 21st minute.

Arlem YA started the match brightly and went into the lead quite early when Socky Cardozo made a through-pass and as Lloyd raced into the box, he wasted no time in slamming the ball to the far corner of Maina SC nets, keeping their entire defence napping.

Maina SC retaliated with some dangerous forays and increased the tempo of the match by weaving some nice moves.

Maina SC’s hard efforts paid off when Savio Fernandes made a forward pass on the right flank to Milagres whose angular effort landed to the far end of Arlem YA nets, beating keeper Leo Cardozo without a clue.

Arlem YA thereafter went into a defensive mode for a while but suddenly in the 19th minute Joyston Cardozo broke the Maina SC defence to score a great goal.

But the resolute Maina SC unit did not give up and pressed hard to restore parity. Nevil Fernandes and Frazer Castanha moved deep inside the rival box on quite a few occasions and in the 21st minute created an opening which saw striker Milagres Fernandes complete his double with an elegant effort.

The match then rose to some dizzy heights with the ball moving from one end to the other, giving an impression that a goal would come anytime soon at either end.

Arlem YA had the last laugh in the 55th minute as their attacking medio Clins thrived on a nice pass and banged the ball into the far corner of the rival net for their third and match-winning goal.
