The annual ‘Tripurari Purnima’ was held at Vitalapur, Sankhali on the banks of the River Valvanti. The festival marks the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon king Tripurasur. Celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first fortnight of the Hindu month of Kartika, devotees mark the occasion by releasing lamps in the river.
As part of the rituals, a procession of Lord Shrikrishna was held followed by a cultural programme at the Vithal temple premises. At around 11 p.m. a palkhi (palanquin) procession of Lord Shree Vithal Rakhumai was held followed by the symbolic killing of demon Tripurasur after which the Sarang (hot air balloon lamp) was released. The highlight of the festival was the boat competition that featured artistic and eco-friendly models of boats floating in the river at midnight.
