MUMBAI: In a big embarrassment to Mumbai police, an Anti Narcotics Cell inspector was among five persons arrested by the Raigad police Monday after they raided a rave party where drugs were being used.
Hours after his arrest early Monday, Anil Jadhav was suspended by the Maharashtra government.
“Jadhav has been suspended pending an inquiry,” a senior official said. “Five persons, including inspector Anil Jadhav of Mumbai’s Anti Narcotics Cell, were arrested in connection with the rave party where drugs were provided to the youths for consumption,” Raigad district Superintendent of Police, Mr R D Shinde said.
Incidentally, the day this party was busted, June 26, is also the International Day against Drug Abuse.
Besides Jadhav, the other four arrested were identified as Jadhav’s aide Sunil Ghule, the party organisers Snehjit Sajalkar, Kushankumar Sujankumar, hotel manager Rahul Khanna while one more person Vickey Shah is still absconding, Mr Shinde said.
Around 290 youths including 59 girls from well-off families had attended the party held at Khalapur in Raigad district off the Mumbai-Pune expressway, 60 km from here, Sunday night.
Home Minister, Mr R R Patil earlier in the day said any police officer found to be involved in the incident would be suspended. An inquiry has been initiated into the rave party, Mr Patil said, adding that he has sought details of postings of Anti Narcotic Cell officers. When asked about the exact role of the inspector of the Anti Narcotics Cell in the party, Mr Patil said, “Jadhav was found in a room where the drugs were kept.”
Police had raided the rave party organised in hotel Mount View at Khalapur, off the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Sunday night and seized contrabands like ganja, charas, cocaine besides articles used for consuming drugs and Rs 3.08 lakh in cash. The accused were booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, police said.
