Allegations, counter allegations at Colva gram sabha

The differences within the Colva panchayat members came out in open, with panchas trading allegations and counter allegations accusing each other of alleged cheating, extortion and corruption, during the gram sabha, on Sunday.
The villagers eventually walked out as the panch members continued accusing each other of alleged misdeeds. The villagers, however, raised concern over the issue of illegal and haphazard parking along roads pointing that hotels were not allowing parking within their premises. This, they said, is causing problems to free flow of traffic as vehicles are parked on the road. They demanded a stern action on it and also asked the panchayat to set up a welfare fund through contribution from these hotels for development and beautification of the village.
Sarpanch Menino Fernandes said that he will approach the police for action against unauthorised parking while a resident pointed that action should also be taken against hotels that are built in the no development zone.
Further the gram sabha also raised concern over the condition of roads that have been dug up and sought from the panchayat that a joint meeting be called with the PWD officials as the dug up roads could give rise to accidents.
The villagers also raised the issue of garbage at Colva beach. On this, the sarpanch informed that the panchayat has been regular in its task, however, it is the duty of the tourism contractor to maintain cleanliness. The sarpanch also assured the gram sabha that the panchayat will act against illegal businesses operating in the village, adding, the locals will be given priority for running any business near the beach.
Further it was decided to hold a joint meeting with officials to resolve the issue of the health centre in the village as the proposal has hit a stumbling block.
