PANAJI: Goan squash sensation Akanksha Salunkhe clinched girls U-19 title in the Jaipur Junior Open on Sunday. In the pre-quarterfinals Akanksha defeated Ashlesha Dhankani from Rajasthan, 3-0, in quarterfinals she defeated Ridhi Sampat from Maharashtra 3-0, in semifinals she defeated Aishwarya Bhattacharya from Maharashtra, 3-0 while in the finals she defeated Jui Kalgutkar from Maharashtra, 3-1.
Akanksha has thus won this prestigious tournament with dropping only one game.
The tournament also saw a rise of her brother, Yash Salunkhe who stood 5th having lost to Mas Navneet Prabhu from Tamil Nadu, a No 1 seeded player in the quarterfinals. Having lost in the quarterfinals, he won the next match for 5-8 position against Atharva Yadav of Delhi, 3-2, a former Goa player and then the last match for position 5-6 against Arman Darukhanwala from Maharashtra, 3-1.
Yash Salunkhe has been on the rise having stood 5th in the NSCI Junior tournament earlier and came 7th in the Bengal Junior Open earlier. The star player of Goa, Yash Fadte, unfortunately lost in the quarterfinals to Utkarsh Baheti in boys U-15 category and came 5th overall.
