A new taverna with a Portuguese touch in Candolim

Nestled amongst the hustle and bustle of Candolim village, just a stone’s throw away from the Lemon Tree Resort, is Cerveja e Mais, a haven for every beer lover in Goa. The recently opened gastro-pub is a venture by twenty-three year old Divya Rosario. Her family thinks she is the reincarnation of her great grandmother who ran a tavern during Portuguese rule, and that she is now continuing in her footsteps by setting up her own gastro-pub that serves Portuguese cuisine.

Stepping into the restaurant, it gives you a feel of a contemporary bar setting, with rustic brick walls and a dash of gold to remind you of your favourite beverage. The choice of beers here will not only impress you but will also let you sample some good ones yet leave you without a pinch in your pocket.

The vintage Portuguese wall hangings give you a hint of the type of cuisine served here. We started our meal with the delectable home-cooked flavour of spare ribs marinated in honey. Accompanying this was a tall, cold glass of the ever-popular Bira that is also available on tap. The meat had a nice smoky flavour with the added deliciousness of the honey. ‘Pork on the Rocks’ is also a scrumptious option, based on the owner great grandma’s special recipe. Next up, we tried the Crab Sticks along with a chilled pint of Brody’s beer. This beer is a pleasant, bourbon-flavored beer with a hint of honey. The Crab Sticks were perfectly cooked and we loved the crunchiness of the garlic as accompaniment.

Vegetarians do not have to disappointed as there are options on the menu with Portuguese delicacies like Massa Frita (Cottage Cheese and Spinach soaked in batter and tempered) and Tipo de Doce (Ladyfinger in a Portuguese Red Sauce). You will undoubtedly want to indulge in the familiar flavours here. They also have a live rotisserie, which was unfortunately not yet available for us to taste. But, those who want the full-fledged beer experience must try the grilled cheese sandwich with ham and pork tossed in beer, or the crunchy chicken fried with beer and cheese!

Her father Lyn Rosario supports her as the head chef of Cerveja e Mais (Beer and More in Portuguese). “Goa is a land of sun, beaches, music and beer, we thought of bringing a concept which is not only evolving but also educative. We want our customers to enjoy beers from around the globe. We currently have 50 varieties of beer and soon hope to reach the 100 mark,” says Divya.

She has crafted an innovative beverage list beyond the ‘Brewtal List’ of 40+ beers from Belgium to Japan. There are beer popsicles, Beermaritas (beer margaritas), Bloody Beer (Bloody Marys with beer), Beer Sangria, Beer Martinis and even Beer Floats! The experience, complete with beer pong, rotisserie chicken, beer cocktails, mocktails and even beer infused Portuguese cuisine, is often exactly what holiday-goers are looking for in Goa. It’s the kind of place where you’re sure to be entertained every time you visit with lots of board games to choose from, a karaoke set-up always ready to go and lots of live music events planned too. With a room almost exclusively devoted to beer pong, better times are definitely to be enjoyed, so go ahead and arrange for a sober buddy to drive you home!
