800 athletes take part in state level tribal sports tournament


MARGAO: Eight Hundred athletes from seven talukas participated in various sports disciplines at the State Level Tribal Sports Tournament held at Sports Complex, outside Nehru Stadium, Fatorda on Sunday.

The tournament was organised by Kalyan Ashram in collaboration with Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs and Sports Authority of Goa.

The seven talukas which participated in the tournament were Canacona, Quepem, Ponda, Sanguem, Dharbandora, Bicholim and Sattari.

Arjun Gaonkar, sports in-charge of Kalyan Ashram, said that the tournament which concluded at Fatorda on Sunday, was in fact began some two months ago with athletes in various categories such as sub-junior, junior and senior participating in team events like kabaddi, kho-kho, archery, relay race etc.

Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar was the chief guest for closing ceremony. Speaking on the occasion Tawadkar said: “This event is being conducted every three years to scout the talent. The sports department will then nurture the athletes, groom them well and convert them into national and internationals athletes like Limba Rao and Kavita Raut who have made India proud.”

“The sports department has spotted the talent and it is now the responsibility of the department to convert them into great athletes so that they go on to represent the country someday,” Tawadkar said.

The athletes selected from the tournament will participate in the national level competition to be held in Jamshedpur, Chattisgarh in December.
