5 major cities to see holistic development

PANAJI: The state government will undertake holistic development of five major cities in Goa, including Panaji and the suburb of Porvorim, so as to arrest the decaying urban infrastructure during next two years.
Coming out with this information before the state legislative assembly on Friday in his reply to a private members’ resolution raised by Porvorim legislator, Rohan Khaunte, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that the consultant, LKS India Pvt Ltd will undertake holistic design of infrastructure as well as its execution for Panaji and Margao, as well as Porvorim, while new tender would be floated to appoint consultants for Mapusa, Ponda and Vasco towns.
Parrikar said the development of infrastructure would include replacement of sewerage pipelines with high-density polyethylene pipes, laying of internal electrical cables, and new water pipelines among other things.
“The city of Panaji would require `500 crore to `600 crore for its holistic development, while Margao would need `700 crore to `800 crore for the same,” he calculated, maintaining that development of Porvorim would incur an expenditure ranging from `200 crore to
` 300 crore.
Parrikar, who also holds the finance portfolio, said that by 2015, after expected improvement in the state finances, he would consider rest of the state for its holistic development.
“The government is taking up the development of entire state in a phased manner, as just related planning for the entire state of Goa would require at least two to three years,” he mentioned.
Earlier, Khaunte stated that a consultant should be appointed to draw out an infrastructural plan for Goa, especially for fast growing constituencies like Porvorim to avoid problems faced by outgrown cities/ towns in the state.
