49 unclaimed vehicles in city to be auctioned

PANAJI: Forty-nine unclaimed vehicles lying in different parts of the city will be auctioned by the government, superintendent of traffic police Dharmesh Angle has revealed. The vehicles comprise of 40 two-wheelers, eight four-wheelers and a rickshaw.

Angle said that the police had written to the collector regarding the abandoned vehicles under Section 127 of Motor Vehicles Act after collecting details and proper verification reported the matter to the collector. Owners were sent notices to lift (claim) their vehicles after producing necessary documents. However, many unclaimed vehicles are still lying along roads denying people the right to park.

Deputy collector of Tiswadi Gaurish Shankhwalkar issued the order for auctioning of vehicles only after publishing three notices in the newspapers for owners to claim their vehicles, informed the police officer.

The final notice was issued on September 21 this year and the order (proclamation) from the collector to auction the unclaimed vehicles was issued on Oct CCP commissioner Sanjith Rodrigues said, “All unclaimed vehicles lying at different places in the city will be auctioned within the next two months by the CCP.”

Rodrigues said that in all 150 vehicles are abandoned opposite the Panaji town traffic police station and all formalities have been completed for owners to claim their vehicles.

Deputy collector, Tiswadi, Gaurish Shankhwalkar stated that 6 months were allotted to vehicle owners to claim their vehicles.

Convenor of Panaji traffic action committee Bernabe Sapeco opined that unclaimed vehicles could be having ‘fake’’ registration numbers and the police should take immediate action or the vehicles may be used to commit crimes.
