Raia: A goal each in either half by Jobern Cardozo and Ronaldo Coelho helped Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim outclass Dunes Sports Club 2-0 and finish second in the GFA First Division League, at Raia panchayat grounds on Monday.

SCC Cavelossim made their intentions known right from the start as they launched nice moves, one of which culminated into a goal in the 6th minute. Cavelossim’s playmaker Travis D’Souza dispatched a defence-splitting pass which went straight to Jobern and the last named dodged two rival defenders before sending a right-footed curling shot that beat Dunes SC keeper Ankit Gadekar.

Thereafter the match began to be played almost on level terms with the ball moving from one end to the other, and though SCC Cavelossim had an edge the youngsters of Dunes SC stitched some meticulous moves which however failed to materialise into goals due to Cavelossim’s strong defence and excellent goalkeeping by Swisfron Da Silva.

Dunes captain Shashank Ashwekar proved to be a thorn in the flesh for Cavelossim defence as at least on three occasions he came close in finding the mark — twice in the first half and once in the second — when his well-taken shot hit the cross bar and came back into play. Astle Fernandes was the other Dunes player who impressed a great deal and whose tries just missed the mark by a whisker on two occasions in either half.

The second session was also fought closely with both the teams playing on equal footing. Dunes SC stitched some excellent moves and harassed the rival defence time and again, but their strikers failed to materialise their chances when they came their way.

As the match entered the last quarter, SCC Cavelossim stepped up more pressure which saw Joel Colaso sending a long ball right inside the Dunes SC’s six-yard box.

In the 81st minute two of the Dunes SC defenders tried to clear the ball along with their keeper, and as the ball travelled to Ronaldo Coelho, who was lurking inside the box, he wasted no time to slam the ball into the rival nets to buttress Cavelossim’s lead.

Within the next two minutes, Dunes captain Shashank struck a powerful shot on a counter offensive which hit the post horizontal and came back into play.

Dunes were then in full cry but a goal eluded them till the long whistle.

With the win SCC Cavelossim swelled their points tally to 31 and are now occupying second position on the league table. Sesa Football Academy top the table with 34 points and have now qualified for the Goa Professional League in the coming season.
