As part of the Vedanta–Vanarai Village Development Project, an educational and experiential programme was held at Navodhavo Aak, Mayna, Navelim. The aim was to help students connect with traditional farming methods by giving them real-life experience in the field.
Students from Vidya College and Vividha Higher Secondary School, Navelim, along with staff from Vedanta Sesa Goa and Vanarai, took part in the event.
The programme began with a session by Laxman Kharvat from Vanarai, who explained traditional rice cultivation methods and stressed their importance even in today’s fast-changing, technology-driven world, especially for their natural and eco-friendly benefits.
Milind Barve from Vedanta followed with a talk on the environmental benefits of preserving traditional agricultural methods and their role in sustainable development.
Farmer Vishwambar Gawas from Navelim shared his experience to motivate the students.
Participants then moved to the nearby field of Vithu Gawas, where a live demonstration of rice planting was held. Around 30 science students and 13 staff members rolled up their sleeves to transplant paddy seedlings across approximately 1,000 square metres of farmland. For many students, it was their first experience working on a farm. “We didn’t know how rice is grown. Today, we learned by doing it ourselves and it was a truly enjoyable and eye-opening experience,” shared
a student.
