Tiatr fraternity devastated
Margao: Mathias Correa, popularly known as Comedian Selvy in the Tiatr world, passed away on Monday at the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim, where he had been undergoing treatment for more than a week.
He is survived by wife and two sons.
The death of the 48-year-old comedian shocked Goans and the Konkani multitude, who mourned for him on social media, while several others visited his home in Velim in Salcete taluka.
Funeral for the departed soul will be held on July 27 (Wednesday) at 4 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church, Velim.
Incidentally, Selvy’s death came on the day of the month’s mind of veteran Tiatrist Mario Menezes, who passed away in June.
Many Tiatrists, who gathered on the occasion of the month’s mind of Menezes, had decided to visit the GMC where Selvy had been undergoing treatment.
They wanted to donate blood for Selvy, as a call had been given out that the veteran comedian of the Konkani stage was in urgent need of blood.
However, Selvy breathed his last before the Tiatrists could reach the hospital.
People from all walks of life mourned for him on social media: some of his fans cried out recalling his performance as a comedian, his political songs, acting in general, and his last Tiatr entitled ‘8 Dis’.
Priests, nuns, politicians and legislators visited Selvy’s house at Kumbrabhatt, Velim to condole his bereaved family.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, cabinet ministers, former ministers, MLAs condoled the death, expressing sympathies to the family.
The Tiatr Academy of Goa, the Konkani Bhasha Mandal and several other organisations also condoled the sudden death of Selvy.
