The Colvale police on Wednesday arrested a jail guard attached to the Central jail in Colvale after he was found to be in possession of drugs worth `52,000.
According to the police, the contraband was being smuggled into the jail to be delivered to an inmate. The accused has been identified as Suraj Gawade, a resident of Ponda.
Police said they received written information from a police inspector of the Indian Reserve Battalion that a jail guard at the Central jail was in possession of a substance, suspected to be drugs, and that he was trying to smuggle it into the jail premises.
On receipt of the information, Sub Divisional Police Officer Jivba Dalvi, along with Colvale police inspector Somnath Mahajik and his team, rushed to the spot and conducted a detailed panchanama inside the jail.
During a frisking exercise, the accused was found to be in possession of the narcotic substance, suspected to be cocaine, weighing four grams. The Colvale police subsequently registered an offence under Section 21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, arrested the accused and seized the drugs found on him.
According to the police, the accused confessed during his interrogation that he was supposed to deliver the narcotic substance to an undertrial Vikat Bhagat, who is in the jail in connection with a murder case.
It may be noted that recently a security guard was caught at the Central jail for possessing drugs worth Rs 1.04 lakh following which vigilance was maintained over the jail staff and also the inmates.
Police said the arrest of the jail guard was possible due to the efforts of police inspector Sushant Joshi and his staff, who are deployed at the entry point to the jail premises.
