Relief to Aquem residents as MMC clears garbage

The residents of Aquem in Margao finally heaved a sigh of relief on Saturday after the commercial town’s civic body cleared the mixed waste, which included animal carcasses, from areas along the ring road following several complaints from the people.

Sources in the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) said nearly 450 bags full of waste was collected from the spots of which almost 120 bags were filled with mix waste, which was later shifted to the
Sonsoddo plant.

“MMC has cleared the waste from this isolated spot. The area, which had turned into a mini Sonsoddo is now wearing a new look. We hope the people of Margao will show some civic consciousness,” said a resident of the area.

He added that the place was stinking badly and the foul odour reached right the houses of the residents in the evenings.

The civic body deployed men and machinery to clear the waste following complaints from the residents of Aquem. An excavator was used to lift the garbage, which was later segregated and filled in bags by the MMC workers.

“The MMC did clean these areas in the past, but the waste found its way here again. The dumping of waste here in isolated areas needs to be monitored by the MMC,” said a resident of Aquem. He added that the local councillor has been making efforts to monitor the areas and keep them free from garbage.
