After more than a year of despair comes an art exhibition titled ‘Come Into Play’, that aims to break viewers out of their stupor of gloom brought about by the
pandemic.

The exhibition, curated by independent art curator, Samira Sheth, features works by Goa-based abstract artist Darpan Kaur and Ahmedabad-based sculptor Sagar Joshi.

“The last year has been filled with misery and sadness. The general mood has been low; and so, I wanted to curate a show that conveyed exuberance and a sense of play,” says Sheth and adds that the key themes of the exhibition are happiness, connection, and love. This is embodied in the works of the featured artists.

Joshi is inspired by the little things in life and has on display miniature papier mâché sculptures that celebrate the joyful relationship humans share with their pets. These are sculptures of girls twirling and swinging in delight or sitting and enjoying a quiet moment with their pets. “These charming sculptures embody a sense of innocence and sweetness; a celebration of life and they are sure to put a smile on your face,” says Sheth and adds that the deep bond emphasised in Joshi’s work is a tender reminder that it is our connection with living creatures, whether animal or human, that gives our lives their deepest meaning.

Kaur, on the other hand, is inspired by the abstract. “Layered and textured in mood and movement, her free-spirited images are both playful and sensuous, wild and soothing at the same time,” says Sheth. Kaur’s work is part of a series called ‘Wild Things’ that draws from the intricacies and nuances of living in Goa. “In Goa, there are four months of incessant rain and wild things grow everywhere, coloured vines shoot up to rusted gates and boundary walls and there are plants that come out of the pavement stones. It’s unashamedly untamed and a feast for the eyes,” says Kaur.

Through the exhibition, the goal, says Sheth, is to create an uplifting and hopeful experience. “To be able to re-enter the world of art after being locked down and unable to view art and connect with artists in person – it’s uplifting. What this exhibition offers, therefore, is a chance where, for a few moments at least, you are transported to a happier world through these artists’ imagination,” Sheth says.
