COVID bio-medical waste dumped at Sonsoddo will be lifted: MMC

The chairperson of  Margao Municipal Council (MMC)  Lyndon Pereira,  on Thursday, said that the MMC will  spray chemical  on COVID bio-medical waste dumped at Sonsoddo to disinfect it before it is lifted for  its scientific disposal.

Pereira along with the vice chairperson  Deepali Sawal  carried out the inspection of the  COVID bio-medical waste  at  Sonsoddo on Thursday, a day after the opposition demanded with the council to clear the piled up  COVID waste at
the earliest.

More than a tonne of  COVID  bio-medical waste has been dumped at Sonsoddo by the MMC,  creating a panicky situation, and risking the other workers working on regular  garbage collection.

Curtorim legislator Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco has demanded that the waste piled up at  Sonsoddo should be immediately  removed and scientifically disposed of at the earliest, else the people  will be forced
to agitate.

“I directed the sanitary inspector  to spray  chemical on this COVID bio-medical waste collected at the Sonsoddo. Sanitary inspector
told me that it has been already done. I spoke to the managing  director of the  Goa Solid Waste Management Corporation and he assured to lift the said waste for disposal once the spraying of  chemical is done,” Pereira said  after the site inspection.

South Goa  district administration officials said that the MMC is responsible for collecting and disposing the COVID bio-medical

“It cannot be left to pile up,”  said a senior official from the South Goa  district administration.

Sources said that the MMC collected  bio-medical waste from  the home-isolated COVID positive people not only of Margao and  Fatorda  but also from private hospitals, which treated
COVID patients, from MMC area and other areas and dumped it
at Sonsoddo.
