In a bid to do their bit to help society in these troubled times, the Libra Socio Legal Trust has begun providing free medical assistance to those in need.
President of the Trust, advocate Siddhi Mayur Parodkar says that a lot of times it is difficult for people to get in touch with their family doctors, due to their busy schedules. “Many have queries related to COVID-19 symptoms, treatment and post-COVID-19 care. A few are also suffering from anxiety and during such times they want to connect with a doctor. For some, counselling is required,” she says. Thus, keeping all this in mind, the Trust has started a medical assistance helpline wherein doctors across Goa have agreed to be part of the cause, voluntarily.
The doctors on board include, Amey Swar (orthopedic surgeon), Kannaya V Sirsat (BAMS physician), Vedika Walke (BHMS), Sonia S Kanekar (BAMS), Rajesh Javherani (senior consultant and medical superintendent, Victor Hospital, Margao), Keval Shirodkar (general surgeon, Goa Medical College), and Nidhi Prabhu (junior resident in department of general medicine at GMC).
The helpline began on May 31, and on the first day itself they received calls for which prompt response was given, says Parodkar. “Doctor, patient and member of the Trust connects through a conference call. One COVID-19 positive patient approached for help and another patient admitted to GMC was given counselling for his psychological and emotional strength,” she says.
Further, sharing her views on the COVID-19 scenario in the state, Parodkar states that the unexpected rise in cases in Goa has led to a lot of panic, leaving doctors, patients and affected families in a very helpless situation. “Goa has badly felt the need of proper medical infrastructure to cope up with this virus. Education has also been affected badly due to the pandemic and online classes are not fulfilling the required expectation of academic performance,” she opines.
She adds that overall, all authorities in charge for management of this disaster, be it government officials, MLAs, or hospital authorities, have drastically failed in efficient management of this pandemic. “As members of society, we have also somewhere failed to take up the responsibility and abide by SOPs and take precautions,” she says
And considering the need of medical assistance and awareness, the Trust, she says, had taken an initiative to reach out to society at large. “Blame games will not help to solve the issue,” says Parodkar, adding that the government should gear up with more effective measures and each one of us as responsible citizens should take care of ourselves and reach out to people in need.
