With the sorry state of affairs in the state where COVID-19 positivity rate is at 35 per cent, it’s difficult for patients and caregivers to have access to nutritious meals. Dempo Group of Companies is doing their bit for Goa

The second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic has brought with it a host of challenges for people affected by the virus such as access to healthy and balanced food for overall well-being. In this backdrop, there are quite a few food distribution sites and like-minded individuals who have come together to provide free food to people who have limited or no access to nutritious meals.

To join the fight against COVID-19 and to provide relief to COVID-19-affected people, the Dempo Group of Companies has started an initiative to deliver food to families during their quarantine period.

This idea was conceptualised by chairman, Dempo Group of Companies, Shrinivas Dempo, and his family, when he was desirous of doing something for people affected by COVID-19. “Dempo Group has already sponsored oxygen concentrators and cylinders, besides donating to the COVID relief funds. Apart from this he felt that something should be done regarding food,” says a representative of the company who has been working in the capacity of facilitator of this initiative.

A total of 200 packs of meals were given on each day since the initiative kicked off on May 9and will continue till things improve considerably. “I have contacted the lunch supplier who agreed to provide lunch,” she says.

For logistics and delivery, they have collaborated with Rotary Club of Panaji. “It is because of the timely logistic support of the Rotarians that we have been able to deliver food on time. Members of the Rotary Club of Panaji are handing over the packets to the needy on day-to-day basis,” she adds.

The team with the help of chef Ganpat Naik strives to keep the meal balanced, nutritious and simple. “The contents of a single meal include steamed rice, curry, chapati and cooked vegetables. We also add pickle to bring in a bit of spice and of course a bottle of water,” she says.

Since they started on May 9 people have been acknowledging that the team serves healthy food. “Our chapatis are welcomed as most of the other groups do not serve the same. Initially we were providing vegetarian food options but some of them being typical Goenkars, were craving for fish curry which has now been added to the menu,” she adds.

To avail this service, you can visit the Facebook or Instagram page for details or contact the company, and lunch will be delivered to the doorstep. Lunch packets are currently being delivered in and around Panaji, Betim, and Porvorim. The team has been providing lunch at Goa Medical College (GMC) gate and to people who place their orders via phone calls.

“We typically deliver food to families during their quarantine period by taking a copy of their test report,” she says, adding that all of us should do our bit to tide over the situation. (Details: 9881884646)
