Iran police probe death of Swiss Embassy staffer in Tehran

TEHRAN: Iranian police on Tuesday started investigating the death of a Swiss diplomat who died after reportedly falling from a high rise in the capital of Tehran. The Swiss woman, in her 50s, fell from the upper floors of a 20-story building in which she lived in northern Tehran, the state-run IRNA news agency reported. A worker discovered her missing on Tuesday morning and called authorities. The Swiss Foreign Ministry in Bern acknowledged in a statement that an employee “died in a fatal incident on Tuesday.” The ministry declined to identify the woman, but said diplomats had been in touch with local police.

Pak to begin manufacturing of China›s COVID-19 vaccine

ISLAMABAD: Special Assistant to the Pakistani Prime Minister on Health Faisal Sultan said on Monday that the local production of China›s single-dose CanSino Covid-19 vaccine is about to commence in the country to facilitate its vaccination drive. Thanking China for supporting Pakistan in its fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, Sultan told local media that China remains a strong partner which had donated vaccines and other supplies and is also transferring technology of vaccine production to Pakistan, the Xinhua news agency reported. The start of the local production of the CanSino vaccine will gradually make Pakistan largely self-sufficient in meeting its Covid-19 vaccine needs, he said.

2 killed, 18 injured in Moscow hotel fire

MOSCOW: Two people were killed and 18 others injured after a fire broke out at a five-storey hotel building in Moscow, local media reported on Tuesday. «Two adults died in the hospital. It was not possible to save them,» the TASS news agency reported, citing a source from the local department of the Russian Emergencies Ministry. According to the source, the fire, which started at 3.27 a.m. at the Vechny Zov Hotel and was extinguished by 4.30 a.m., covered an area of about 100 square metres, reports Xinhua news agency. At the time of the fire, 305 people were inside the building, said the report.

12 killed in Afghanistan floods

KABUL: At least 12 people were killed as heavy rains and flash floods hit parts of Afghanistan’s Herat province, the local government said in a statement on Tuesday. “Flash floods engulfed vast areas in Adraskan district and neighbouring areas on Monday,” Xinhua news agency quoted the statement as saying. Among the dead were one woman and four children, according to a local government source. The floods also destroyed tens of residential houses and orchards in the districts and caused closure of several roads, the statement said.

Italy’s population declines for 3rd straight yr

ROME: Italy’s population declined in 2020 for the third consecutive year to a total of 59,258,000 as of January 1, 2021, the country›s National Statistics Institute (Istat) reported. Istat said on Monday that the figure was around 384,000 fewer than a year earlier, a decline of 0.64 per cent, reports Xinhua news agency. Nearly a quarter of the decline came from a significant drop-off in the population of immigrants, which totalled nearly 80,000 last year, or around 1.3 per 1,000 residents, about half the rate of arrivals a year earlier, Istat noted. Istat did not link the impact of the coronavirus pandemic with the change in population.
