Five police stations, covering Salcete taluka, have taken a series steps to enforce the COVID-19 norms such as wearing of face mask, maintenance of physical distancing and others, and booked 9,620 people for not wearing mask while moving in public places during the last four months.
According to sources at police headquarters, five police stations from Salcete including Margao have taken steps to enforce the COVID-19 norms such as wearing of mask, maintenance of physical distance and others and have booked 9,620 people for not wearing mask while moving in public places.
These cases were booked between January 1, 2021 and April 25, 2021. As many as 9,620 cases were booked.
The police said that cases were booked separately against those who failed to maintain physical distance in public places. As per figures available from police headquarters, Margao from January 2021 to April 25, 2021, 9,620 cases were booked, of which Margao police booked 2,666, Maina Curtorim police booked 1,271, Colva police booked 2132, Cuncolim police booked 1198 and Fatorda police booked 2,353 cases.
One senior police officer appealed to the public to follow all COVID-19 guidelines to contain the spread of the infection. He said that people should wear face mask when they step out of their homes and maintain physical distance in public places.
“They should avoid crowds and avoid going out without any reason. If we follow all the guidelines, we can control the pandemic,” he said.
“It is a good sign that even labourers have started wearing face mask. The local police will continue with their efforts to ensure that everyone understands the gravity of the situation and starts wearing face mask and maintaining social distancing,” he added.
The officer said that “primary duties of the police force are to maintain law and order, crime prevention and traffic regulation. Above all since it is a public service, police personnel also have the duty to redress any grievance of the public at the time of pandemic and keeping this in mind, we have adopted a strategy to contain the spread of COVID-19.”
Meanwhile, the Cuncolim police said that police station staff along with officers is conducting a series of awareness campaigns and meetings every day for general public, traders and others.
The police said that they explained to the public precautions to be taken and the guidelines that should be followed.
