The state has recorded 54 new deaths linked to the dreaded COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, the highest ever in a single day, taking the COVID death toll to 1,222.
The government claimed that of these 54 deaths recorded on Saturday, 40 occurred in the last 24 hours, while the remaining 14 deaths had occurred between April 29 and April 30 at the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) at Bambolim. However, the same was not officially recorded due to an alleged technical glitch in the portal.
Seven of these 54 died within less than 24 hours after being brought to health facilities, while one of the patients was brought dead to hospital. The fatalities also included two patients, who had reportedly taken their first dose of anti-COVID-19 vaccine. Hypertension and diabetes mellitus were the most common co-morbidities among the other patients, who lost the battle against the virus.
The death toll clearly indicates that currently Goa is witnessing at least two COVID-related deaths every hour.
