Salgaocar FC, Calangute match halted
DULER: The Selvel Goa Professional League match between Salgaocar FC and Calangute Association was halted at Duler Stadium Mapusa. The drama began in the 72nd minute when Calangute Association were awarded a penalty when Salgaocar defender Linbert Rebello handled Melvin Lobo’s effort inside the box. Kouame Junior, who stepped up, coolly converted the spot kick. However, match referee quickly ruled out the goal for a possible infringement by Calangute player and that’s where the drama began as the play was halted. The outcome of the game will be further decided by the GFA.
Kane Williamson awarded with Sir Richard Hadlee medal
WELLINGTON: New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson won his fourth Sir Richard Hadlee medal for excelling across formats and was also adjudged the ‘Test Player of the Year’ in the country’s annual cricket awards on Tuesday. Devon Conway won the men’s ODI and T20 Player of the Year during the 2020-21 awards season which was conducted digitally for a second year running because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Williamson’s incredible home Test summer helped him clinch the two awards alongside the Redpath Cup for first-class batting, after he amassed a whopping 639 runs in just four innings at an average of 159. He claimed the big prize for the fourth time in last six years. In bowler friendly conditions, Williamson, the number one ranked Test batsman in ICC standings, recorded his top international score of 251 against the West Indies in Hamilton.
Reus doubtful, Sancho out of CL quarters against Man City
DORTMUND: Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels and captain Marco Reus are doubtful for their Champions L eague quarter-finals second leg against Manchester City on Wednesday, while winger Jadon Sancho is out. “We’ll have to wait and see who can make it,” Dortmund coach Edin Terzic said on Tuesday, referring to the training sessions still to take place before the match, reports DPA. Both Hummels and Reus were subbed with injuries in the 3-2 win over VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga last Saturday.
Sergio Ramos tests COVID-19 positive
MADRID: Spain and Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos faced a new setback in a season littered with injury problems when his club said on Tuesday he had tested positive for COVID-19. Ramos has been nursing a calf injury since April 1 which led him to miss his side’s 3-1 win over Liverpool in their Champions League quarter-final first leg and Saturday’s 2-1 victory over rivals Barcelona in La Liga.
Hockey legend Balbir Singh jr passes away at 88
NEW DELHI: Balbir Singh Junior, who was part of the Indian hockey team that won silver at the 1958 Asian Games, has passed away at the age of 88. The hockey great played alongside the likes of Balbir Singh Donsanjh, popularly known as Balbir Singh Senior, as well as Leslie Claudius, Prithipal Singh, Balkishan and Charles Stephen, among others. He breathed his last on Sunday morning.
