Panaji market vendors call bandh today

Panaji municipal market tenants association has called for a market bandh on Thursday to protest against the “high-handedness of the Corporation of City of Panaji,” stated a committee member Dharmendra Bhagat.

He said that CCP had issued them permission to set shop but are now dismantling the structures and termed this as sheer harassment by CCP.

He said that this cannot be tolerated anymore and so decided to call bandh after convening a meeting of the market tenants on Wednesday.

Vendors dealing in fruits, vegetable and other items besides committee members are agitated, he added.

While some stated that this is in retaliation to the ordinance to municipalities act which was being imposed by the government. A meeting has been called at 9 am on Thursday at the municipal hall by the committee members to decide the future course of action.

City Mayor Uday Madkaikar could not be contacted on mobile phone over this issue.

Earlier the city Mayor Madkaikar expressed happiness that the Panaji MLA Atanasio Monserrate and CCP panel chief has asked him to field his son Adhavay Madkaikar for the forthcoming municipal election but on the condition that he will not contest.

Speaking to this daily, Madkaikar said, “I am satisfied that he (Babush) had offered me the prestigious post of city Mayor twice to serve the city. The decision he takes about my future would be final and I will follow his instructions as he is my leader.”
