11,731 booked for not wearing face mask in Salcete


Margao: Salcete police booked in all 11,731 people this year  for not wearing face mask during the spike in COVID-19 cases.

People have been fined for violating social distancing norms, not wearing face mask and spitting in the public places, said a senior police officer.

The maximum number of violators were  found at marketplaces or travelling in vehicles.

Another senior police officer clarified that people travelling in vehicles have to wear face mask as well.

As per the available information, out of  11,731 cases, Fatorda police booked 4,400  cases while  Margao police booked 2,869 cases followed by 1,945 cases by Colva police. 

Cuncolim police booked 1,599  cases  while 918 cases were booked by Maina- Curtorim police.

“We have not only fined people for not wearing face mask but also distributed pamphlets to several people creating awareness. We  have ensured  that underprivileged people do not feel harassed while enforcing face mask rule,”  said another senior police officer.

Apart from penalising the violators, police   have also registered  FIRs in case of violation of social distancing rules because of any protest march or a gathering of people with larger than the permitted number.
