Panaji: The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has decided to seal ten illegal borewells next week of two fishmeal and fish processing units in Cuncolim industrial estate, which were dug to discharge untreated effluents.
The board has already got approval for demolition squad from south district collector for dismantling of illegal borewells of M/s United Marines Products and M/s Quality Foods, which is scheduled on December 1 and 2.
The sealing will take place under Air and Water Act in the presence of joint mamlatdar of Salcete, police officials, WRD and GIDC to avoid any law and order situation so that illegal borewells could be sealed expeditiously.
The executive engineer of works division (road) will provide demolition squad consisting of eight labourers and hand tools including concrete breaker.
Earlier, the board had sealed an illegal borewell of United Marines Products which had approached High Court to stay the inspection and investigation of the unit but the court allowed the closure of illegal borewell and asked the unit representative to cooperate with the authority. The board sealed only one borewell among the other identified illegal borewells and the closure plan of remaining borewells was not prepared.
It is pertinent to note that the board had conducted an audit and site investigation of fishmeal and fish processing units following a complaint from local resident over discharge of waste water into water bodies in Cuncolim industrial estate and unearthed illegal borewells, covered under concrete slab, which were used for discharge of untreated effluents from the units connected with chambers/pits/pipes.
