Gaonkar proposes to outsource Sanjivani sugar factory operations



Sanguem MLA Prasad Gaonkar on Monday made a presentation to the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on how the Sanjivani sugar factory, which has ceased to operate, and how sugarcane cultivation can be revived in the state.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the Independent MLA said that he has submitted a proposal to the Chief Minister on revamping of Sanjivani sugar factory by outsourcing its operations and taking up minor repairs of the machinery of the factory and reviewing the staffing patterns.

“I have also suggested in the proposal about rejuvenating sugarcane cultivation through the agriculture department,” he added.
The Independent legislator said that if the government adopts this proposal then in the next five years the Sanjivani sugar factory can turn into a profit-making enterprise.
However, the Sanguem MLA also informed that the Chief Minister told him that the state government intends to set up a new sugar factory under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana.

He further said that the Chief Minister also assured that the sugarcane cultivators will get support price for next three years though the crushing of cane will not take place in Goa.
Gaonkar said that he has proposed to the government on how certain things need to be revived for saving the lone sugar factory of the state and boosting sugarcane cultivation by adopting various measures.

The MLA informed that for the last few months he had a series of meetings with the farmers and also met different agencies who have shown interest in helping the state government revamp the Sanjivani sugar factory.
“The Chief Minister has assured me that he will study the proposal and will decide on the issue,” he added.
The Sanguem MLA further stated that as the Sanjivani sugar factory has been transferred to the agriculture department, it would be easy for the government to motivate the farmers through appropriate planning.
