Online fraudster cheats Ponda man to tune of Rs 1.73 lakh


Ponda: In an online fraud, a retired worker from Ponda has been cheated to the tune of over Rs 1.73 lakh by an unknown person by hacking his bank account and withdrawing money through multiple unauthorised transactions.

In this regard, the victim, Jaiwant Kerkar, aged 64, has filed a complaint with the Ponda police. Based on the complaint, the police have registered an offence against an unknown person under Section 66-D of the Information Technology Act and Section 420 of the Indian penal code.

As per the information, the incident occurred on September 8 wherein the unknown accused person hacked the complainant’s savings bank account, which is with the Ponda branch of the State Bank of India. The account was hacked by the accused by using computer resources, said police. They said the accused withdrew Rs 1,73,856 from the complainant’s account by effecting 43 unauthorised transactions thus cheating the Haveli Curti-based retired worker to the tune of over Rs 1.73 lakh.

The victim learnt about the crime recently when he checked his bank account and found it to be empty. After inquiry, he learnt that some fraudster has withdrawn his money and subsequently he filed a police complaint. Further investigation into the case is under process.
