Panaji: The Ministry of Mines has extended the last date to September 24, 2020, for receiving comments and suggestions from the public on the proposed amendments to the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957.
The previous last date for submitting suggestions was September 10, 2020, which the Ministry extended by a fortnight owing to the continuing flow of suggestions from interested stakeholders.
The government is keen on making changes in the MMDR Act towards reforms in the mineral sector aimed at increasing private investments in the sector.
The objective of the reforms is to accelerate growth and employment generation under the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan.
The reforms propose to bring in private investment for exploration of mineral blocks, move towards the auction only regime for all mining leases, a market determined rate for calculating royalty, among others.
The proposed reforms have elicited strong response from mining states such as Jharkhand and Odisha.
