After the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) came to know from reliable sources that a few vendors in the municipal market were using plastic bags and trying to hoodwink the authorities, surprise raids followed by seizure of goods was conducted, said city mayor Uday Madkaikar.
Speaking to this daily, Madkaikar said that despite a complete ban by the government on using plastic bags and warning those not to use the carry bags a few vendors were trying to hoodwink the authorities.
Madkaikar said, earlier the Corporation had announced that if anyone found violating the CCP norms would be dealt with stern action and had even confiscated the goods, but a few vendors were still using the banned plastic carry bags and troubling the authorities.
While encouraging cloth bags, he appealed to the general public to discourage the use of plastic carry bags which is harmful to health and chokes the drains resulting in waterlogging everywhere in the city.
Madkaikar further said that only M/s Kamacom System Pvt Ltd, located at Bainguinim, Old Goa has been permitted to sell compostable carry bags which is registered under the plastic waste management rules 2016 and amended in 2018 under the Pollution Control Board, he informed.
He pointed out that Kamacom was permitted by CCP only after it got the certificate issued by the Central Pollution Control Board and compliance to the conditions under registration certificate issued by Goa State Pollution Control Board that all bags shall bear a label and certification of CPCB printed on the compostable bags under the said rules.
He further said that any violation by M/s Kamacom would amount to withdrawal of the permission for sale of compostable bags without any further notice.
