Panaji: The state government, on Monday, asked all heads of the industrial units in the state to ensure workplace safety and take required measures to prevent the spread and outbreak of the dreaded coronavirus.
Health Secretary Nila Mohanan urged all the industrial units and estates, especially, the pharma companies and allied industries and all work places in the state to take all necessary precautions and to adhere very strictly to the guidelines of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), which were issued as regards to the opening of the workplaces.
“My earnest appeal that all workplaces must ensure that they take all necessary precautions. It is really quite sad that we are having a situation where one employee is infecting many other employees. All precautions must be taken,” she said while addressing a press conference in Panaji
Mohanan informed that 80-odd employees of Tulip Diagnostics Private Limited at Verna has been tested positive for COVID-19.
“It’s a grim situation. It is a matter that gives us a lot of cause for concerns because earlier 26 of their employees were found positive in the past three-four days. Today, 50-odd samples were found to be positive, and we are having very high positivity rate of 20 per cent of the
total samples proving to be positive for the virus,” she said.
She informed that the throat swab samples of 400-odd employees were drawn for testing, of which the results of 60 samples are still awaited.
She further said that the employees of Tulip Diagnostics Private Limited have been asked to maintain strict quarantine at the places where they are currently residing, adding that the persons who have been tested positive are being shifted to health facilities where they will be provided with the required treatment.
“The matter of concern is that the virus has spread not only at one of their units but across almost all their units,” Mohanan said.
South Goa Collector Ajit Roy in the last week had ordered closure of the unit.
State epidemiologist Dr Utkarsh Betodkar informed that the initial cases at the Tulip Diagnostic were linked to Mangor Hill, the containment zone in Vasco.
Mohanan said that there are also isolated cases that have surfaced from other industrial units, including Cipla.
