Anjuna-Caisua bribery case: panchayat member granted conditional anticipatory bail

The Special Court, Panaji, granted conditional anticipatory bail to Sheetal Dabholkar panchayat member of Anjuna-Caisua panchayat in an alleged case of corruption.

The Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) of the Directorate of Vigilance was on the lookout for Dabholkar in the case following which she had filed the anticipatory bail application.

Earlier, the ACB had arrested the panch members Hanumant Govekar and Surendra Govekar.

Subsequently, both had filed bail applications.

The Court rejected the bail application of Hanumant while conditional bail was granted to Surendra.

It may be recalled that on June 27, the ACB had caught red-handed Hanumant while allegedly accepting bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a businessman.

The ACB had received a complaint wherein it was claimed that some officials of the panchayat had demanded Rs 20 lakh from the complainant. After negotiations, the amount was brought down to Rs 9 lakh to be paid in installments of Rs 3 lakh each.

Accordingly, the ACB had registered an offence against 3 persons and trap was laid while the first installment of Rs 3 lakh was to be paid.

An ACB official said that the complainant, however, could manage Rs 1 lakh. The complainant was asked to come with the amount at a location at Anjuna. When the money was accepted by Hanumant, the ACB caught him red- handed, informed ACB officials.
